Professor Mark Durden posts his interview with Christian Boltanski (1944-2021)

The French artist Christian Boltanski died this year on July 14th aged 76.  I was lucky enough to have met him. He generously gave time for a long interview with me and my then girlfriend at the École des Beaux-Arts Paris on February 14th 1992.  At that time, I was writing part of my doctoral thesis on his use of photography in the book and the following interview is copied from a photocopy from an April/May issue of Creative Camera.  I have lost the magazine but since he was an artist whose work often engaged with the form of archives and presented photographic images degraded through reproduction, it seems appropriate.  He was a brilliant artist who radically transformed my relation to and understanding of photography.
