Rethinking Documentary reflects a process which has been a central element in photographic research at Newport for many years. The work of several participants in the eCPR demonstrates the continued political relevance and vitality of documentary. Research in this strand is involved with an engagement with the various forms and approaches that have characterised the history of documentary practice.
We are examining the implications of documentary’s recent reappraisal and appropriation within the art sector. There is research being undertaken which reads the history of documentary within the dual contexts of its making and its reception, seeking to understand both what has changed in recent documentary and what remains of its core values. Finally, it is worth noting that these developments in documentary photography run parallel to work being undertaken with documentary film within Newport Film School and we are keen to create links between the two.
