Prof Mark Durden, 'The Idea of John Szarkowski: Photographing Architecture’

John Szarkowski was an established and successful photographer before he took up his role as Director of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1962. Through discussion of Szarkowski’s 1956 photographic book The Idea of Louis Sullivan, I will show how Sullivan’s architecture and writings help us understand Szarkowski’s approach to photography as both writer and curator while Director of the Department of Photography at MoMA.
